We are selective with whom we work with, as we predominately work on a commission-based remuneration. A successful introduction and subsequent establishment is as important to us as for our partners. Sweden and Scandinavia have a deep-rooted status in Australia for producing modern functional products of the highest quality and design. For this reason, it is a little easier to introduce new products and allow us to take market share.
As a Swede in Australia, it astonishes one how many Swedish brands are available and are “top-of-mind” in many Australians, regardless of whether it is ABBA, Ikea or Bjorn Borg.
Magnus Marvéus: I started my career as a developer and created my first IT company in 1996. As a self-employed entrepreneur you quickly learn to juggle many roles; salesperson, economist, developer and manager. As the company gradually grew, my role shifted more and more towards management.
In 2000 I sold my first company to MTG and joined their then in-house agency as COO. This in-house agency would later become CDON (one of Sweden’s biggest e-commerce sites). After a couple of years as an employee, entrepreneurship took hold again and a new IT company was created in 2002. This company was also built from the ground up, and is known today as Great Agency Sweden AB.
In 2015, after 13 years of black figures and a staff of 20, I sold a large proportion of this company, I remained on as CEO until my move to Australia in September 2017. Parallel to my time with Great Agency I have been active in several other companies, not only as an active partner and board member but also as an elected board member in various companies.
Fiona Marvéus: I have been working in management in both Australia and Sweden. Prior to my move to Sweden in 1997 I was Managing Director of a Self-Storage and Document Storage facility in the Sydney CBD for a period of 5 years. After my move to Sweden I started to developed accounting skills while assisting Magnus in his IT company and a steel importing company. Over the years I took a bigger role in the steel importing business and took over this company in 2004. This business was then converted from an agency operated business to a Trader operated business in 2005. We supplied the biggest steel wholesalers in Sweden (BE Group, Ahlsell, Dahl, Tibnor) with steel pipes from Czech Republic, Poland and UAE.
During this time, I developed extensive skills and understanding of import/export, logistics, price negotiation with suppliers and end users together with the ramifications of currency fluctuations on a global scale.
Parallel to the Steel business, I was part-time CFO for Great Agency Sweden AB, from 2002 until end 2017. During a downturn in the Steel business during 2015/2016 I took on another CFO position in a start-up company Earin AB (Wireless Earbuds). During this time there I was exposed to many new challenges including negotiating contract terms with global suppliers & distributors, liaising with production in China and placing Purchase orders for components as required, collaborating with partners in Hong Kong regarding global logistic & distribution channels and assisting in raising finance for continuing growth.
